He is director of the Media and Graphics Interdisciplinary Centre and leads the Human Communication Technologies Laboratory at The University of British Columbia. His research and interests cover public art, voice synthesis, e-health, new human computer interfaces, community development and sustainability issues. Professor Sidney Fels will be presenting his talk "Sustainable Communities: Where Does Communication Fit In?".
Abstract: In this presentation, I'll attempt to initiate discussion around the role that communication and communication technologies play in sustainable communities. Ellul's asertion that technology is not bad, is not good and not neutral will be a starting point to contextualize the future of communication and its active influence on sustainable communities. I will discuss some of the research that is being done at the Media and Graphics Interdisciplinary Centre and the Human Communication Lab at the University of British Columbia that are looking towards this future. By looking at the next wave of communication technology and how it relates to the sense of the individual within a community aesthetic, I hope to start a dialogue on what our role as communication researchers is to shape sustainable communities for this workshop.
